If you are a pumping mom you know you need an easy and efficient way to store breastmilk. Containers work okay for the fridge but take up a lot of space and are not ideal for freezing. The best and easiest way to freeze breastmilk is to use breastmilk storage bags. But which ones work the best? There are several on the market but I am going to talk about the two I have used. They are the most popular ones out there so they have been tested and used by many.
My absolute favorite breastmilk storage bags that appear to be the favorite of pumping moms everywhere are..
Lansinoh Breastmilk Storage Bags
Features of these bags according to the manufacturer:
- Leak-proof
- Ideal for storing & freezing breastmilk
- Convenient pour spout
- Patented double Click ‘n’ Secure seal
- Bags lay flat for efficient storage and thawing
- Strongest and largest bag available
- BPA Free
Why do I love these? They are the perfect size, they lay flat easily, and they are easy to stack in the freezer. I have never had a leakage issue or any cracking at all. I easily can thaw them and the bag maintains it's integrity. They seem to hold a little more milk than other bags I have tried, and you can write the date and ounces right on the bag.
While I have never had a leak, I like to store several of these in a larger ziplock bag so if there is a leak it would be caught in the bag and salvageable (more breastmilk storage tips coming in a future post). I have used these in my fridge freezer storage as well as the deep freezer without any issues.
I have talked to many breastfeeding moms and most seem to prefer these bags over all others. I don't think you can go wrong with these.
Medela Pump and Save Breastmilk Storage Bags
Features from the manufacturer:
Pump or pour into bag for fast, easy breastmilk storage in refrigerator or freezer.
The bags feature easy-close zipper top that doesn’t leak and a stand-up bottom to prevent spills. Save time and use the easy-connect adapter to pump breast milk directly into bags, or pour directly from bottle to bag for simple storage.
- Compatible with all Medela breastpumps
- Protective oxygen barrier preserves breastmilk nutrients
- Comes with easy-to-connect adapter
- For use in fridge or freezer
- No-leak, easy-to-close zipper top
- No-spill, stand-up bottom
I have used these bags and while they do have a neat way to connect to the pump I still prefer the Lansinoh. When I used these they came with an adhesive strip that attached to the pump. They now feature an adapter instead of the adhesive which pumping moms seem to love. While you can try connecting your Lansinoh bags using tape, or rigging up the Medela adapter with a different brand, these bags are a great option if you want a system to pump right into your bag without any trouble.
These are good bags, compatible with all Medela breastpumps, that freeze easily although they do not lay quite as flat once frozen as the Lansinoh bags.
You can find them on Amazon at a discounted price.
These are my two favorite breastmilk storage bags. I have tried a couple of other generic ones but nothing I liked as much as these two.
Please let me know if you have any questions about these bags at all!
