I recently had the chance to download and try a new phonics app called Readwithphonics.com.
This was perfect for me since I have a three year old, and a five year old who is starting kindergarten this fall. I downloaded the app from Amazon and put it on our kids kindles for my children to try out.
The app is a series of games that teaches phonics sounds in an interactive way. The games get harder as they go along but they were easy enough for my five year old to figure out.
This game encourages learning phonics sounds and learning 1,200 plus words. Phonics is the method of learning sounds which once understood allows you to read the English language. There are only 44 sounds to learn.
Within the app there are four worlds for children to explore. The main character is an alien which encourages interaction and helps the kids along the way. Scoring uses a positive method of earning points for correct answers and adding them up.
As children learn their sounds another sound gets unlocked encouraging kids to keep going and scoring. This enables learning in a fun way at their own pace. As children learn the sounds, learning words becomes easier and easier.
My five year old loves this game/app. She is just learning to read and is enjoying learning her letter sounds and putting words together. When it comes to my three year old son, well he loves the alien (or monster to him) but does not seem as keen on learning the sounds yet. I am sure it will come with time. I love the colors, the learning, and the fun in an educational package.
Read with Phonics was created by a teacher who wanted to find a simple and effective way to teach reading. Any app that is fun for children and encourages learning to read is a win to me.
